It's been pretty hectic the past few months. To get right to it, I did have quite a few setbacks and letdowns actually. The promotional campaign didn't amount to much, sad to say. I had a couple e-mails back and forth with a radio station and magazine but ultimately they didn't pick me up. I had a brief correspondence with a former school shooting survivor who is now a teacher, which was enlightening. I was talking to the executive director of the local book festival who read my book, gave me good feedback, mentioned the "topicality" of my book. He requested my author photo, bio and the cover file. I thought I was in, but ultimately they didn't pick me. Next thing I know, John Irving is headlining the thing, so the joke now for the rest of my writing career is that I got bumped for John Irving. At least I do have that, hehe.
I was in talks with some bookstore owners. They sounded enthusiastic about my book and about my mission, but in the end, they never returned my call or message. I had this one editor lined up for my next project who bailed on me at the last second, which was a low blow too. Also, sales have slowed. Everything combined kind of put me in a funk, to the point I am cutting my next deadline really, really close...
However, I can't say that it's all bad. Changing gear from promotion more to straight writing was a nice shift. I am wrapping up the final touches on my new book, did find another editor right away, have a new proofreader ready. I kind of have this cool rotation of multiple projects: promotion, production/publication, preparation. And that is an ideal situation me and my writing partner used to talk about. I have a few more ideas for marketing, am excited to share more about the new book coming out soon, and am happy to say I started official research for my next big novel.
